About Jon Coen

I live on Long Beach Island, in the great state of New Jersey.… like, year round. Winters can be a little rough, long stretches of frozen desolation. But then there are those surreal days of soft snowfall and empty waves. Summers are crazy hectic. As the Island swells to capacity we all have to put our heads down to make coin, but our friends are all around, the island is green and the water’s blue. Of course, in between those are the blissful days when the garden is exploding and someone drops off fresh striped bass, chasing snowy barrels in the winter or blue claw crabs with my kid in the summer.

Tide Table Project

By |July 25th, 2018|Commercial Work|

The start of 2018 has been one of the best of my career, loaded with fantastic projects. For this one in particular, I was hired as part of the Togetherness Agency as a copy writer/local project manager in rebranding, building five websites, bolstering social media, and creating a web store for the Tide Table Group. You may know them as the Mud City restaurants - Mud City Crab House, Parker's Garage Ship Bottom Shellfish, The ...

Just Beneath the Surface, Season Two

By |July 12th, 2018|Commercial Work, Video Production|

For the last several years I've put a lot of time an effort in a mini-documentary series based on the LBI Region called Just Beneath the Surface with Oak Leaf Media. It's mean to give folks a deeper understanding of life here - the outdoors, the cultural and the people. It's not about bringing more people necessarily, it's about making more engaged visitors. The idea is to give people a sense of ...

“Who was Andy Irons” for Teton Gravity

By |May 30th, 2018|Editorial|

Full disclosure, I never interviewed A.I. I watched him, read about him, and wrote about his heats, but I never spoke with him. Yet a large part of my career was covering pro surfing at that time and I was fully aware of what he meant to the sport. I was on the beach at the Billabong Pipe Masters the day his son Axel was born on Kauai and Bruce ...

Red Bull Switchboard

By |January 28th, 2018|Editorial, On Air Hosting|

Since I started snowboarding, it was always very deeply tied to surfing and skating. Even though I've always been merely average at all three, I've has this fascination with the crossover - surfing a big north swell at Holyoke in the morning and running up to the Poconos for the twilight session, hiking a hit in Northern California and then checking the jetty at Humboldt before dark, riding at ...

“Dark Horizons” for Surfer Magazine

By |January 21st, 2018|Editorial|

I grew up reading every issue of Surfer Magazine cover to cover. It has always been an honor to get a feature assignment for "the bible of the sport," but it's increasingly rare these days with the state of print media. Hence, I am very excited to share "Dark Horizons," in the February 2018 issue.  Surfer Magazine, February, 2018  While the photos are top notch and we did document the ...

Visit Ocean County Video Spot

By |December 4th, 2017|Commercial Work, Video Production|

After seeing our mini-documentary series, Just Beneath the Surface, Ocean County's Office of Tourism and Business Development hired myself and Oak Leaf Media to create a video spot for the county. We were very excited to take on this project. We took a couple of days this summer and put together something that really shows the best of Ocean County. Our models were awesome. Brie Fagan and Dave Ambrose especially were troopers. ...

Just Beneath the Surface, Episode 1.3

By |September 26th, 2017|Video Production|

Summer's busy. It's busy as hell. And I know it's tough for folks to follow along with everything going on. Now that things are slowing down, I have a chance to share the project that has kept me on my toes this year. Thanks to Dave's Electric, Farias Surf, Mud City Crab House  the Ship Bottom Brewery and never ending support from the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce  we've done an entire ...

Dave Vision Tribute, The Aquarian

By |March 28th, 2017|Editorial|

Of everything I have ever written, this is likely to be among the most meaningful to me. In early January, we said good-bye to Dave Franklin of Vision, aka DaVish, a guy who welcomed me deeper into New Jersey punk/hardcore 20 years ago, as he did for so many over the years that I now count as friends. On Sunday, April 2, we will celebrate Dave's life and character in ...

Interview with Travis Rice on “The Fourth Phase.”

By |September 25th, 2016|Editorial|

Last week, I got a one-on-one interview with Travis Rice in LA, on the day of the premiere of his latest film "The Fourth Phase." I hesitate to call this a "snowboard" film because it's so much more. Rice and crew studied, followed, and rode the hydrological cycle of the North Pacific for four years. It's not just an action sports film - it documents the place where riding, science, ...

Salty Dog Cruise for Inked Mag

By |June 18th, 2016|Commercial Work|

Last Saint Patrick's Day, I set sail with a few thousand punk rock misfits and Irish hooligans aboard the Salty Dog Cruise - Flogging Molly's annual voyage out of Miami to the Bahamas with an amazing lineup. Three straight days of seeing Rancid in a small venue and floating around on rafts in the Caribbean with Fishbone watching Flogging Molly, plus hanging with Frank Turner, Christopher Ellis, and The Street Dogs. ...
