This winter we had a great project lined up for Red Bull around winter surfing in New York and New Jersey but alas, there was a huge pandemic spike in December and there was no way to hold a live event in January. Instead we had to make the change and make this an online project. See the full piece at RedBull.com. Working with the Red Bull editors, I helped ...

Jamaican Surf Team Scores Swell and Support

Jamaica is very much on my bucket list. I have long heard about Jamnesia, the idyllic rootsy and charmingly ramshackle beach enclave that every wander-curious surfer in the hemisphere has read about. It’s the surf camp/music venue/homestead/skate spot established many years ago by the patriarch of Jamaican surfing, Billy Wilmot, aka, Billy Mystic, frontman of the internationally acclaimed reggae group, the Mystic Revealers.   “There’s something just so satisfying about bobbing around in the ocean on a boat you’ve resurrected from the ground up, knowing every nook and cranny as it hurls you forward on epic little adventures. As of Sunday, the World Surf League has released several weekly episodes on the phenomenal story of Billy Kemper's recovery. A little over a year ago, Kemper was fighting for his life in Morocco after a brutal bounce off the bottom. By December, he was back out charging Jaws. I interviewed Kemper specifically on his fitness program in rehabbing from his injuries. He's not only a certified XPT Trainer, but ...

Talking to a Made Guy from a NYC Crime Family

Growing up in New Jersey or New York, you learn a lot about Italian American culture, even if you're not Italian.  Combine that with the amount of classic mafia movies made in the last 40 years and you definitely feel how organized crime, or at least the legend of organized criminals starts to expand. I think we're all aware of stories and myths of who's a "made guy" and the ...

Hunter Jones for Surfline

As much as I enjoy the movement toward a more racially just society, it always gets me that we were discussing these topics 25 years ago in the punk rock world. But I'm very excited to get to write about people who are breaking boundaries for race and gender. "Following a year where the struggle for racial justice in America has everyone throwing keyboard haymakers at each other, Jones, a ...
